Board of Directors targets Summer 2017 to have new CEO in place

Following a year-long focus on leadership transition planning, including the development of St. Peter’s 2017-19 Strategic Priorities, the Board of Directors has initiated the executive search for the next President and CEO of St. Peter’s Hospital.

St. Peter’s has tapped the healthcare industry’s leading executive search firm, B. E. Smith, to conduct the search. B. E. Smith is currently fielding an extensive networking and marketing campaign to attract a highly-qualified field of candidates, including national distribution of the posting for the CEO position. To date, the search has generated more than 125 applicants.

“We have seen a high level of interest in this position very early on in this search process,” said Mark Taylor, Chair of St. Peter’s Board of Directors. “Candidates are telling us that they are impressed with the work the organization has done in the past year to solidify the vision for St. Peter’s. Our strategic priorities are both signaling expectations for our next leader and ensuring this person’s accountability to the community, medical staff, and employees in providing high quality healthcare to the Helena region.”

The planning process for the search began with extensive interviews with key stakeholders at St. Peter’s, including the Board’s designated Search Committee (comprised of eleven members: three at-large community members, two community board members, two physician board members, one non-board physician, one Registered Nurse, and two non-clinical hospital staff members), physicians, senior management and leadership team members from across the hospital and medical group clinics. Applicants will be reviewed and vetted utilizing insights and information gathered during these interviews.

The search firm will conduct an initial screening of candidates and forward a list of eight to ten candidates to the Search Committee in April. The Committee will select five or six candidates for first round interviews. After completion of the first round interviews, the Search Committee will select the top two or three candidates to return for a second round of interviews with a larger group of stakeholders.

St. Peter’s Board of Directors—comprised of thirteen members of the community including physicians, health professionals, and business leaders—will make the final selection of the President and CEO. The Board of Directors anticipates a new president and CEO could be in place as soon as the summer of 2017.
