Women & Children's Unit

The St. Peter’s Hospital Women & Children's Unit staff cherishes every child born under our care. Our entire team--medical, nursing, surgical, education and support staffs--all contribute to the excellent care every family receives at The Women and Children’s Unit. We are committed to promoting family-centered care, with respect and compassion.

Labor and Delivery
The Women and Children’s Unit has nine labor and delivery/recovery/postpartum/newborn (LDRPN) suites. Each suite features a birthing bed, which allows mom to transition from labor to delivery to recovery in the same room. The new baby is kept in the mother’s room for the length of the hospital stay, and families are encouraged to take part in the baby’s care. A separate nursery is available if needed.

Suites also include:

  • an extra bed for a support person
  • a bassinet and sink for the baby
  • TV, DVD player & internet hook-up
  • meals ordered off the menu, at the patient’s request

Should an emergency situation occur during the birthing process, all supportive equipment and supplies are available in the suite. A Cesarean section operating room is located on the birthing floor, seconds away from each birthing suite, if needed. A three-bed Special Care Nursery is also available at the Women & Children's Unit for any newborn who needs special medical attention.

Care is provided to our youngest community members (aged 0-18 years) by Registered Nurses trained in pediatric care. Providing family-oriented care is a high priority in the pediatrics department, and a family member is encouraged to remain with the hospitalized child.

The nursing staff of St. Peter’s Hospital Women & Children's Unit is committed to supporting the new family both clinically and by providing education for new parents. All of the Unit’s Registered Nurses are certified in the Obstetrical and/or Neonatal specialty area. They work closely with Helena’s obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, family practice physicians, and pediatricians in order to provide each family with a memorable and safe delivery experience.
