The Operating Room/Post Anesthesia Care Unit at St Peter’s Hospital is located on the main floor in the southwest corner. The Unit is comprised of 8,320 square feet, which is converted into four operating rooms and a recovery room.
The patient population served by the Operating Room/PAR Departments consist of the newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients requiring or seeking surgical intervention to maintain or restore an optimum level of wellness. The Operating Room/PAR Departments are direct patient care units that provide invasive surgical procedures and recovery from those procedures.
The Operating Room/PAR Departments provide a safe environment for patients experiencing invasive procedures to restore optimum health and wellness. The staff of the Operating Room/PAR Departments provides optimum assistance to the surgeons in meeting the emergency, preventive, and restorative health needs of the patients. The Operating Room/PAR staff provides quality-conscious, competent, and cost-effective care with the respect for life, dignity, and patient privacy.
Objectives of the department are to:
-- Provide exemplary care and education to the patient and family concerning surgical procedures, anesthesia, recovery, and pain management.
-- Assist in the coordination of the patient’s plan of care involving an interdisciplinary approach including Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, admitting physician, hospital staff, patient and family.
-- Provide psychosocial, emotional and spiritual support and intervention to patients and family members.
-- Ensure a safe, caring environment for patients by providing well-trained and knowledgeable staff.
Regular Hours—The Operating Room provides services for operative and other invasive procedures and immediate postoperative care on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week. The PAR is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
Emergency Hours—Emergency hours are after 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 24 hours Saturday and Sunday. We are staffed for emergencies and add ons during the day from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. An “on call” OR staff is available 3:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. for emergency procedures. A designated C-section room is set up on a 24-hour basis seven days a week staffed with Operating Room personnel and the “on call” staff after hours and on weekends.
Admission—Patients requiring surgical intervention and monitoring are scheduled for necessary services.
The procedures performed include: General surgical procedures, ENT, Oral, Thoracic , Vascular, Urological, Orthopedic, Pain Management, Obstetrical and Gynecological, and Other Invasive Procedures.
The Operating Room and admitting departments collaborate to assure a smooth flow of pre-surgical reservations and admission proceeding. The patients are scheduled directly through the OR scheduler. The patient’s physical, psychological and social needs are assessed initially on the Surgical Floor or Same Day Services units and are reassessed on admission to the Pre-op Holding area.
