Emergency Department

The Emergency Department is located on the main level of the Hospital. The department is a 12-bed emergency treatment facility open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The department, which provides care to a patient population that is from infant to geriatric, is staffed with licensed physicians and registered nurses and provides care comparable to a Level III (American College of Surgeons criteria) Trauma facility.

The Emergency Department provides medical evaluation, treatment and disposition to presenting patients of various ages and varying levels of illness and injury from minor to critical. Objectives of the Department are to provide a clinical environment conducive to medical screening evaluation and identification of emergency medical conditions, prioritization (triage) for treatment, appropriate and prioritized medical interventions with continued monitoring provided consistent with the identified medical conditions and evaluation of response to treatment. Also, to provide necessary definitive medical care to stabilize an emergency medical condition within the discretion of the physician providing the medical screening examination and within the capabilities and capacity of St. Peter's Hospital and to provide for appropriate continuity in patient care through discharge instructions, pertinent referrals, and mechanisms for inpatient admission or transfer to another facility for diagnosis or treatment as indicated.

The Director of Emergency Services is an RN with appropriate clinical and leadership experience and/or potential. S/he is selected by the Vice President of Patient Care Services to provide responsibility for effective organization and management of the Emergency Department and Ambulance Service on a 24-hour basis including effective performance of the staff and quality of the patient care provided. The Emergency Services Director has open access to the Vice President of Patient Care Services for nursing direction if warranted.

The Emergency Services department operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Services include medical screening evaluations and patient triage. Capabilities encompass the scope of medical procedures, testing and privileged medical staff members of the Hospital as it pertains to the nature, scope, and degree of services that can be rendered. Subject to the capacity limitations of the Hospital, and the availability of individuals and equipment, the following are the specialty care capabilities of this Hospital: Intensive Care; Coronary Intensive Care; Trauma Level III; Level I neonatal care; Level I obstetrical care; Orthopedic surgery; General Surgery; Psychiatric/Substance abuse; Nuclear medicine; and CT/MRI Diagnostics.
