St. Peter’s Hospital regularly offers a six-session tobacco cessation course, Quit for Life. The class runs for six sessions: Tuesday May 7; Thursday May 9; Tuesday May 14; Thursday May 16; Wednesday May 22; and Tuesday May 28.  The instructor identifies pitfalls of relapse and provides tips for careful planning to prevent relapse. Also included are the latest improved skills for stress management, weight control, assertive communication and exercise to help participants succeed. During Quit for Life, the instructor teaches a step-by-step method for changing behavior. This group approach uses positive thinking, alternative behaviors, one-on-one help, rewards and group support to help participants stop using all forms of tobacco.

Taught by a certified lactation consultant, this class includes the benefits of human breast milk, anatomy and physiology of lactation, elements which promote successful feedings, determining adequate intake and breast pumping and returning to work.  Both parents are asked to attend together or the new mom and her birthing coach/partner.

Family Nurse Practitioner Leslie Wilson of St. Peter’s Medical Group-North will focus on frequently asked questions and problems associated with menopause.

Wilson’s presentation will include information on the nature of menopause, its causes, and what signs and symptoms to look for in detecting its first stages. The workshop will also address managing menopause symptoms, health risks, hormone replacement therapy, staying healthy and staying positive during this change in life.

A 12 hour, 2 day instructional program for youth ages 11-13.  Topics include how to deal with medical emergencies, babysitting as a business, age appropriate entertainment, how to handle a choking child, responsibilities and safety.  Students must pass a written exam and demonstrate rescue breathing/choking on a mannequin.  Students must attend both days. 

Cost is $50/student and scholarships are available upon request.  Scholarship requests take 3-4 weeks to process so please allow time.

Enrollment is strictly limited and refunds or class re-schedules cannot be guaranteed for missed classes.

A relaxed, fun and informative class for expectant or new grandparents will be offered at St. Peter’s Hospital.

The course will be taught by Registered Nurse Educator Karrie Fairbrother. Topics will include infant development, SIDS risk reduction, injury prevention and care of common injuries. Infant choking rescue and infant CPR will also demonstrated. This class does not include a certification card.

Even if a grandchild will be born elsewhere, grandparents are welcome to attend. Additional topics to be discussed include childbirth and parenting today, grandparenting/memory making, encouragement versus advice, safety reminders, long-distance grandparenting, and a tour of St. Peter’s Women’s & Children Unit.
